The Nest Eggs Collection - Prints Available

This autumn I’m delighted to share something new — which has also been a long time coming!

For the first time in over five years, I’m releasing a series of prints - The Nest Eggs.

The Nest Eggs Collection began as a suite of paintings for an investment company moving into new offices here in Tauranga. I was asked to create a cohesive series for their new space.

My mind went straight to some of my favourite subjects.

Eggs and nests.
New life and nurture.
Home and hearth.
All the good vibes.

We all understand the idea of building a nest egg for the future.

So, why not look to nature for clues?

I have always admired birds. They are hard workers. Extraordinary builders. They gather what’s at hand, weave with patience, and craft a nest sturdy enough to hold promise and potential.

It felt like the perfect metaphor — and a thoroughly enjoyable excuse to return to one of my favourite painting subjects.

And so, the Nest Eggs were born.

Back to the Palette

I adore painting eggs. Earlier in my career I painting a series of oils called Nestlings. At least my obsessions are consistent!

Eggs are surprisingly complex once you begin to look properly, with light and shadow constantly shifting.

They’re also a wonderful learning subject — each egg a quiet masterclass in colour, if you’re paying attention.

At first glance an egg appears cream. Or grey.

Look closer and it’s anything but.

Soft blue shadows pool underneath. Lavender slips along the curve. Russet freckles scatter across the shell. Warm ochres, pale sage, even the faintest blush of pink.

Pleasure poured out as each piece took shape, supported by wind-blown branches from a plane tree I collected in Cambridge.

One nest led to another, and the story unfolded in chapters.

The Nest Eggs Collection

NEST EGG I

A single quail egg rests in a neatly woven nest perched on bare branches. Quiet, simple and full of promise, it hints at the comfort of security and the gentle beginnings of something new.
Every story starts somewhere.

NEST EGG II

A second little “deposit” arrives later in the season — two eggs nestled together as autumn settles in. A touch of lichen suggests resilience and longevity, and the steady strengthening that comes with time.
It’s amazing what patience can do.

NEST EGG III

The nest grows busier as more varieties arrive. Colour and pattern hint at diversity and adaptability, while subtle touches of gold offer a nod to increased value and thoughtful, steady growth.
A little gold never hurts.

NEST EGG IV

One egg carries a fine crack — an echo of the small bumps that appear on any journey. Yet the nest remains steady, its mix of eggs reminding us that diversity protects and steadies the whole.
Not every crack is a crisis.

NEST EGG V

A full, abundant nest holding a lively mix of eggs — an image of maturity, breadth and balanced growth. A sliver of shredded document paper is woven in, linking renewal, care and long-view stewardship.
Yes, I really did tuck that in there.

I hadn’t seen the full collection for a few months after they were installed. Then in December I walked into the new Tauranga offices and there they were.

I felt a distinct jolt of pleasure.

“Did I really paint that?”

It’s always reassuring when your past self leaves you something you still rather like.

Because they’re A5, you’ll find affordable ready-made frames almost anywhere — The Warehouse, Kmart, Spotlight, or your local framing shop.

Individually, they hold their own quite happily.
